A very clean book in excellent condition that is bound in marbled boards with green cloth cover and quarter calf spine and calf corners. Missing piece at bottom one-inch of spine. Calf shows signs of rubbing. The text describes the beginning and the evolution of heraldry in England. Exceptionally clean text and engravings. Many full-page engravings throughout the text with attractive hand coloring. Fold out page opposite page 270 that gives the pedigree of Verney (family) from the time of William the Conqueror. The book of the fold out page contains an engraving entitles ?Sketches of Fictitious Genealogy Illustrative of the Rights of Quartering.? The inside front cover contains the bookplate of Cosmo Nevill. The Appendix of Illustrations is actually a collection of writings related to heraldry and various families (I) Life of Sir William Dugdale, (II) Life of Gregory King, Lancaster Herald, (III) A Catalogue of All of the Officers of Arms, (IV) Editions of Books Published in England on the Science of Heraldry, and (V) A Genuine Copy of the Book of St. Albans First published in 1486.
