An Inquiry Concerning Human Understanding. A Dissertation On The Passions. An Inquiry Concerning The Principles Of Morals. The Natural History Of Religion by David Hume. This classic Enlightenment project surveys how human minds form ideas, judge evidence, and derive beliefs about the world. It presents an empiricist program that treats impressions and ideas as the basis of knowledge, analyzes how ideas are built from simple impressions, and explains how association links thoughts through resemblance, contiguity, and cause and effect. The work argues that belief arises from habit and from a patterned interaction of memory, perception, and expectation, rather than from pure deduction, and it treats causation and induction as human-made constructs grounded in experience. It also develops a moral psychology in which virtue hinges on social usefulness and sympathy, and it provides a critical history of religion, tracing the shift from polytheism to theism while warning against fanaticism, superstition, and intolerance. These local summaries illustrate how passions shape knowledge and religious belief across cultures.
