Book once owned by the founder of Hendersonville, NC. Book previously owned by "Mitchell King 1841" which is hand-written on a label inside the front cover. Mitchell was a Judge who owned and donated 1,000 acres which became the town of Hendersonville, NC. His slaves built its 100-foot-wide Main Street. Dating to shortly after the founding of Henderson County in 1838, Hendersonville is traditionally known as "The City of Four Seasons." Immediately below the first hand-written label is a second (printed) one that reads, "A. Campbell King." On the title page, written in old ink, is "Mitchell King 1841" and also an inscription presumably written in the hand of Mitchell King that reads, "Sir Peter King, Afterwards Lord King, This Descendant is now Earl Lovelace." A handwritten note found between pages 114-115 of the Second part reads, "The letters to the Care of Henry D. Cruger No 44 Hanover Street New York. The manuscript for ? Mr? Kings? use not in a hurry for it only send it when he has finished with it. She will write to Mr King as soon as she arrives in Washington, she is so much engaged at present she cannot possibly do so now." Henry D. Cruger was an attorney in New York. Rebacked. Five raised spine bands. New red leather label on spine. Original Cambridge style leather boards. Corners worn. Old damp-stains to upper half of front end sheets and early sections of text, gradually lessening towards the back sections. Pages lightly warped. Later printing. 8vo. 2 parts in one binding.
