An Inquiry Into the Nature of Sleep and Death: With a View to Ascertain the More Immediate Causes of Death, and the Better Regulation of the Means of Obviating Them. Being the Concluding Part of the

An Inquiry Into The Nature Of Sleep And Death by Alexander Philip Wilson Philip presents a collection of papers republished from the Philosophical Transactions (1827–1834) that form the concluding portion of the author’s Experimental Inquiry Into The Laws Of The Vital Functions. The work investigates how nervous, sensorial, and muscular systems interact to sustain life, and how sleep and death arise from exhaustion and debility within these systems. It details experiments on the nervous and ganglionic nerves, the effects of dividing nerves of the lungs, and the use of voltaic electricity to substitute nervous influence in digestion, respiration, and secretion. The treatise further explores the sources and nature of circulation, the relation between nervous and muscular systems, and the nature of sleep and death. It culminates with a considered classification of death’s forms and a discussion of medical implications for understanding and treating disease. The volume also includes an Appendix addressing criticisms and clarifications of prior positions.
