An "Advertisement" by the translator, himself a political economist, calls attention of English speaking audience to this seminal work written in the aftermath (1809) of the French Revolution by a distinguished French economist. Malthus, himself, considered Ganilh's criticism of Adam Smith on productive labor to have validity. Ganilh (1758Ð1836) was a member of the Committee of Public Safety in the French Revolution, and, as a member of the mercantile school, here analyzes critically Adam Smith and others on wealth, capital and labor, the critical ingredients in political economy, thereby anticipating Ricardo and others.
