About this Item
"Withdrawn From Stock" overstamped over the "Sheffield University Library" bookplate to inside of front board. All foldout and other illustrations appear present, and in a handsome state of preservation, with no stains, etc. (though the librarians have placed a small round identification stamping to many of the blank versos, presumably to discourage theft.) But it appears there was a PROBLEM: We presume that, over the past century, the original spine perished. So, the folks at the Sheffield University Library apparently re-attached the front and rear boards to the text block by fashioning a new spine out of silver cloth, or even silver cloth tape. This was neatly done, but the PROBLEM with this is that the new "spine" is what book-binders refer to as "glued down." That is to say, each "signature," or gathering of pages, is directly adhered to this new, single-layer spine. (Upon opening a normal, hardbound large book, one will notice the outer layer of the cloth spine folding AWAY from the text block. In this case, no such bowing is provided for.) While this arrangement is holding together for now, we suspect that -- given any considerable repeated use -- this text block will start to split away from this temporary spine. To achieve any kind of archival permanence, we recommend this book be rebound with a traditional cloth spine by a professional bookbinder. Unless you ARE a bookbinder, or employ one, such an operation will often be priced starting at about $100 (or more.) That's why we now offer this uncommon book at $120 (or less), rather than the more typical $495. Additionally, please note this heavy quarto weighs more than 7 lbs. -- Priority or overseas shipment would be expensive. 643 pp. including Bibliography and Index. Here reduced from $195. As with all our items priced higher than $90, this item will be shipped "signature required.".
