If you're looking for a detective who has a sudden "vision" or finds a clue because of some lucky coincidence, you're looking in the wrong place. Meet Inspector Joseph French. He doesn't rely on magic; he relies on hard work. In this story-the one that started it all back in 1924-you're dropped right into the heart of London's diamond district, Hatton Garden. Everything seems normal until a junior partner at a big firm is found murdered and the safe is completely empty. We're talking about £30,000 worth of diamonds just gone.

You'll follow French as he takes over the case, and trust me, he doesn't stay in London for long. His search for the killer and those missing gems pulls you across the English Channel and straight into the breathtaking scenery of the Swiss Alps. But don't let the pretty view distract you! In the Engadine valley, French has to navigate a total mess of alibis and fake clues. The heart of the mystery is all about timing. You'll watch as he scrutinizes train schedules and shipping records with the precision of an engineer.

Since Freeman Wills Crofts actually was a railway engineer, he built this plot like a complex machine. Every gear turns perfectly, and there isn't a single wasted minute. You're going to see French dismantle a defense that looks absolutely airtight at first glance. He calls it "pegging away"-the steady, professional accumulation of evidence that eventually leaves the criminal with nowhere to hide. On the other hand, the atmosphere of post-war Europe is so vividly rendered you'll feel like you're actually there, breathing in the crisp mountain air.

In addition, there aren't any cheap thrills or supernatural shortcuts here. It's just you and French against a brilliant criminal mind in a high-stakes game of chess. If you enjoy a sophisticated puzzle that actually rewards you for paying attention, this debut case is going to be your new favorite. It's a story of high-stakes theft, cold-blooded murder, and the ultimate triumph of human logic. Get comfortable, because once you start tracking those diamonds with French, you won't want to stop until every single lie has been unraveled.
