Instructions for Borrowing a Planet: Rediscovering Wonder, Humility, and Our Place in the Living World (Paperback or Softback)

What if saving the planet begins with paying attention?

We live in an age of extraordinary scientific knowledge. We know more about climate, ecosystems, biodiversity, and the natural world than any generation before us. Yet many of us have become strangely disconnected from the very world we hope to protect.

In Instructions for Borrowing a Planet, educator, storyteller, and lifelong student of human behavior Mark Donnelly, PhD, offers a different kind of environmental book. Rather than beginning with crisis, he begins with curiosity. Rather than guilt, he begins with gratitude. And rather than asking readers to save the entire Earth, he gently invites them to notice the small corner of it already entrusted to their care.

With the warmth, humor, and wisdom of a favorite graybeard walking beside you on a neighborhood trail, Donnelly explores why children instinctively notice what adults overlook, how wonder quietly disappears beneath the distractions of modern life, why people protect what they first learn to love, and how simple acts-planting a tree, feeding birds, learning the names of wildflowers, restoring a stream, or simply taking one more walk around the block-become profound expressions of stewardship.

Drawing from ecology, psychology, philosophy, neuroscience, Indigenous wisdom, and everyday experience, Instructions for Borrowing a Planet reminds us that we are not owners of the Earth but temporary borrowers. The measure of our lives is not how much we consume, but how faithfully we care for what has been placed in our hands.

Filled with memorable stories, gentle humor, practical wisdom, and quiet hope, this is an invitation to rediscover the extraordinary hidden inside ordinary days.

Because the world was never ordinary.

We stopped noticing.

And perhaps the greatest gift we can leave future generations is not a perfect planet, but the ability to fall in love with it all over again.
