Current wastewater treatment technologies are not sustainable simply due to their high operational costs and process inefficiency. Integrated Microbial Fuel Cells for Wastewater Treatment is intended for professionals who are searching for an innovative method to improve the efficiencies of wastewater treatment processes by exploiting the potential of Microbial Fuel Cells (MFCs) technology.
The book is broadly divided into four sections. It begins with an overview of the "state of the art" bioelectrochemical systems (BESs) as well as the fundamentals of MFC technology and its potential to enhance wastewater treatment efficiencies and reduce electricity generation cost. In section two, discusses the integration, installation, and optimization of MFC into conventional wastewater treatment processes such as activated sludge process, lagoons, constructed wetlands, and membrane bioreactors. Section three outlines integrations of MFCs into other wastewater processes. The final section provides explorative studies of MFC integrated systems for large scale wastewater treatment and the challenges which are inherent in the upscaling process.
- Clearly describes the latest techniques for integrating MFC into traditional wastewater treatment processes such as activated sludge process, lagoons, constructed wetlands, and membrane bioreactors
- Discusses the fundamentals of bioelectrochemical systems for degrading the contaminants from the municipal and industrial wastewater
- Covers methods for the optimization of integrated systems

About the Author
Rouzbeh Abbassi is a Professor of Risk and Safety Engineering in the Artie McFerrin Department of Chemical Engineering at Texas A&M University. His research focuses on safety and risk engineering for complex energy and process systems, with particular emphasis on dynamic risk assessment, asset integrity, and emerging energy technologies. He has led and contributed to major national and international research initiatives, authored and edited several books, holds editorial roles with leading journals, and has collaborated with various industry partners on the safety, reliability, and resilience of engineering systems
Asheesh Kumar Yadav is a Principal Scientist and Associate Professor at CSIR-Institute of Minerals and Materials Technology, Bhubaneswar, India. He completed his doctoral study at the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi and postdoctoral studies at Princeton University, Princeton, NJ, USA. Currently, he is working as Marie Curie Fellow at Rey Juan Carlos, Madrid, Spain. He is the pioneer of constructed wetlands coupled microbial Electrochemical technology (CW-MET) for energy production, wastewater treatment, and other environmental applications. He received numerous awards like Marie Curie Fellowship; Indo-American Research Professorship (American Society of Microbiology); Four times winner of Erasmus Mundus Scholar Awards for teaching and research in universities in Germany, Poland, Sweden, Portugal; Winner of VLIR scholarships of Belgium; and Nuffic fellowship of the Netherlands. Besides this, He got an adjunct faculty position at the University of Tasmania, Australia. He is interested in developing low-cost energy generating and saving wastewater treatment systems with capabilities of resource recovery. Moreover, he is invested in developing circularity and sustainability in water and wastewater treatment systems.
Faisal Khan is a Chemical Engineering Professor and Director of the Mary Kay O'Connor Process Safety Center and the Ocean Energy Safety Institute (OESI), Texas A&M University. He is the founder of the Centre for Risk Integrity and Safety Engineering (C-RISE), a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering, the Engineering Institute of Canada, and the Canadian Society of Chemical Engineering. His areas of research interest include offshore safety and risk engineering, inherent safety, risk management, and risk-based integrity assessment and management. Dr. Khan is actively involved with multinational oil and gas industries in addressing safety and asset integrity issues. He also served as the Safety and Risk Advisor to the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. He continues to serve as a subject matter expert to many organizations, including Lloyd's Register EMEA, SBM Modco, Intecsea, Technip, and Qatar Gas. He served as a Visiting Professor of Offshore and Marine Engineering at the Australian Maritime College (AMC), University of Tasmania, Australia, where he led the development of the offshore safety and risk engineering group and initiated global engagements with numerous international institutions.
Dr. Khan is the recipient of the President's Outstanding Research Award of 2012–13 at Memorial University, the President's Outstanding Research Supervision Award of 2013–14 at Memorial University, the CSChE National Award on Process Safety Management of 2014, and the Society of Petroleum Engineers award for his contribution to Health, Safety, and Risk Engineering. He has authored over 500 research articles in peer-reviewed journals and conferences on safety, risk, and reliability engineering. He has authored five books on the subject area. He is the Editor of the Journal of Process Safety and Environmental Protection, Safety in Extreme Environment, and ASME Part A (Risk and Uncertainty Analysis). He regularly offers training programs/workshops on safety and risk engineering in various locations, including St. John's, Chennai, Dubai, Beijing, Aberdeen, Cape Town, Doha, and Kuala Lumpur.Dr. Vikram Garaniya completed a BE (Chemical) from India and MEngSci from the University of New South Wales, Sydney. He graduated with a PhD in Engineering from the University of Tasmania (UTAS) in 2010, where he has been a teaching/research-active academic based at the specialist institute, the Australian Maritime College (AMC). Currently, he is the Acting Director for the National Centre for Maritime Engineering and Hydrodynamics (NCMEH) and Associate Head of Research.
