About the Author

Shmuel N. Eisenstadt (1923-2010) taught at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and was frequently a visiting professor at American universities. He is the author of numerous works including The Political Systems of Empires, which won the 1964 McIver Award.

Chaim Adler accomplished his undergraduate and graduate work at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, where he earned a Ph.D. in sociology in 1966. He has written extensively on the sociology of education. Dr. Adler is currently senior lecturer in sociology and director of the Institute for Innovation in Education at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
