Print on Demand. This book explores the connection between degree-conferring institutions and state supervision, particularly in medicine. It compares current laissez-faire attitudes to more proactive oversight by state bodies. An examination of European models is used to support the argument for stricter regulation within the United States. The author argues that the prestige of American degrees would improve if a uniform standard for awarding them were nationally implemented to reduce the current variability which has allowed diploma mills and degree-selling institutions to flourish. The work exposes the shortcomings of a system which equates state control with state responsibility for awarding degrees, explaining why this is a false equivalency. Among the main themes of the book is the assertion that state supervision is compatible with the protection of academic freedoms and diversity of standards provided it is implemented fairly and without bias or special interests. The author concludes by proposing that regulation would encourage healthy competition between medical schools, reduce the risks to both students and the public and foster greater trust in the integrity of medical degrees. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

In the first place, we must concede that there is no disposi tion on the part of the American people to transfer the national government or any part of the powers now vested in the state governments. In the second place, there appears to be no ade quate reason for supposing that if the federal government were possessed of the power advocated by Mr. Freeman, the educa tional standards of the country would be any higher than they are under existing conditions. It cannot even be said with any degree of certainty that there would be a uniform law, under which institutions of learning would be incorporated, unless the constitution should be so amended as expressly to require it. Whatever reform is to be accomplished will have to be wrought out by the individual action of the states.
The difficulty under which we labor in this country is not due to the fact that the states, rather than the United States, are in control of the subject of education. In Germany, control over the universities is not in the empire, but, as in this country, is in the several states. The only difference is that in Germany the states exercise their rights of supervision, while in the United States, as a rule, they do not.

Other policies
Please note that we cannot accept cancellation requests once an order has been placed.
All Forgotten Books titles are printed on demand. The moment an order is submitted, it is automatically transmitted to our distributor and then forwarded to the printer, where it enters production. This process begins within minutes and is entirely automated.

For this reason, we kindly ask that you double-check the title, edition, and your shipping details before placing an order.
If you change your mind after ordering, you are welcome to return the book once it arrives, and a refund will be issued in accordance with AbeBooks’ return policy.
Please also make sure your address is correct before ordering as we will no be able to intervene and make changes before the book is shipped.
We can provide digital samples for all our print books ahead, so don't hesitate to reach out.
Returns
As a small publisher we do not have the facilities to resell returned books, so any returned book will be recycled. If the book is damaged or defective please continue with the return process, and thank you for letting us know so that we can improve our products. If you’re returning for another reason, however, please consider whether you could donate or gift the book instead so that it avoids the waste pile.
