Synopsis

Frontier disputes are a subject of special importance in the study of international l relations and one that has perhaps been insufficiently explored. It is a commonplace that territory has a psychological importance for nations that is quite out of proportion to its intrinsic value, strategic or economic. Sentiments of national pride and national honor are aroused by threats to territory more rapidly and more intensely perhaps than over any other type of issue. Long standing resentments and long cherished desires to recover territory may be harbored, whether the territory in question represents an economic asset or an economic burden, and whether it is inhabited by ethnically related people or not. In consequence, disputes over territory have been perhaps the most important cause of war between states in the last two centuries. From the preface.
