Synopsis

Understanding the process of how English learnerslearn to read in two languages has been a majorchallenge for reading teachers. Few studies haveempirically tested theoretical models that explainthe processes of becoming a proficient reader in twoalphabetic languages, Spanish and English. This studyused Pefertti's blueprint of the General Componentsof Beginning Reading to explain the relation betweenoral reading fluency and comprehension, two criticalconstructs of beginning reading. Participants weresecond grade Spanish-speaking students who werelearning to read in Spanish and English. One of themajor findings suggest that early and later skills inSpanish contribute 47 percent of the varianceexplained in English reading comprehension,indicating that a fluent reader in Spanish, has ahigher probability of becoming a fluent reader inEnglish than a less fluent reader in Spanish. Ouranalysis should be particularly interesting toresearchers and educators who want to learn moreabout the practical implications of interpreting thereading process in Spanish and English usingPerfetti's theoretical framework.
