This edition presents testimony, witness statements, and submitted material that reveal the pressures of unemployment, relief, and urban growth. It highlights the complexities of migration within a changing economy and the responses of city officials, welfare agencies, and researchers.
- Read direct remarks from Chicago’s mayor and other leaders on relief, migration, and race relations.
- See how policy ideas about residency, housing, and social support were debated at a national inquiry.
- Explore discussions of urban impact, labor markets, and the balance between federal influence and local administration.
- Access accompanying statements and research on the social and health factors behind migratory movement.
Ideal for readers interested in mid-20th century social policy, urban history, and the interplay between migration and city life. This material provides a documentary perspective on how a major city confronted destitution, migration, and race during a pivotal era.

Store description
