12mo, pp xii, 185, [1], 9 engraved plates showing multiple images of plants, all with original hand-colourings, folding table, bound in contemporary speckled polished calf, neatly rebacked and recornered with red label to spine, light offsetting from plates, else a very good copy, NINTH EDITION; Pricilla Wakefield's little botany for youth was hugely popular from the late 1790's onwards, in both coloured and uncoloured versions with Sarah Hoare's poem on Botany added to the 8th Edition of 1818. In her expanded version of this poem, printed separately in Bristol in 1826, Hoare pays tribute to Wakefield's work where her poem was first published 'altogether an accidental occurance.' She would go on to published another larger collection of poetry based upon scientific observation in 1831. An attractive copy of a book more often found in dilapidated state.
