166 p.; 18 cm. Contemporary calf spine with plain grey paper over boards. "21" at head of front board, the digits printed separately on small pieces of paper. Former owner's name on front fixed endpaper: James Fir? Small stamp at head of title page: "School Library, District No. 12." Although born near Harrisburg, Pa., Lindley Murray (1745-1826) moved to a Quaker community in York, England, after the American Revolution. He wrote and published 11 textbooks that came to dominate British and American schools in the first third of the 19th century. The Introduction to the English Reader includes a section on the evils of slavery. Although, Murray's works were popular, editions by these Albany publishers are very scarce. In Good Condition: cover is rubbed, with some loss of paper on each board; bears remains of 19th-century repairs consisting of linen along the board edges; tears of 2 cm. or less from lower edges of several leaves with minor loss; scattered soiling; occasional light foxing.
