Second, since ethics plays an increasingly important part in the professional lives of engineers, the authors incorporate ethical decision making into the discussions and problems. In many of the problems, students are required not only to solve the technical part, but also to consider the ethical ramifications of solving the technical problems.

About the Author

P. Aarne Vesilind is Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering and R.L. Rooke Chair in the Historical and Societal Context of Engineering in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Bucknell University. Before joining Bucknell, he was a Professor at Duke University from 1970 to 1999. At Bucknell, Dr. Vesilind's teaching specialties are environmental engineering, professional ethics, engineering communications, sludge treatment and disposal, design of water and wastewater treatment plants, air pollution control, and solid waste engineering. His research interests include wastewater treatment, solid waste management, and professional ethics. Dr. Vesilind is also the co-author of Vesilind/Worrell/Reinhart, SOLID WASTE ENGINEERING (Brooks/Cole 2002).
