Octavo, 7 x 4.5", disbound text block, [4], 200, [8] pp. This copy inscribed to verso of title page "T. Prince. Boston 8.6. 1720.2.6". Additional inscription to upper margin of title page, possibly by John Easton (1624-1705), Colonial governor of Rhode Island. A seemingly lost volume from the library of Thomas Prince (1687 to 1758), early American historian and pastor of Old South Church in Boston. The Prince library, now located at Boston Public Library, is "one of the few colonial American libraries to survive largely intact.a major resource for studies in the history of early New England" (bpl.org). According to Appleton's Cyclopedia, Prince was "the most learned scholar, with the exception of Cotton Mather, in New England," and formed the first major private library in the colonies. We locate only two sale records for books from the Prince library, one in a 1925 Goodspeed catalog, and one in a 1940 Goodspeed Catalog. Text block toned, damp staining to upper corner of text, first couple of leaves nearly detached from text block.
