About this Item

The mathematician and natural philosopher John Keill (1671-1721) played an important role in the dissemination of Newtonian ideas in the first two decades of the eighteenth century. In 1700, in his role as deputy to the Sedleian Professor of Natural Philosophy at Oxford, Keill gave an important and innovative series of lectures, which expounded Newtonian natural philosophy with the aid of practical demonstrations and experiments. These lectures were disseminated in Latin as Introduction ad Veram Physicam (1702), with considerable impact. This book was the wider-published outcome in English. This example ( third edition made in 1733) comprises 306pp + 2pp advertising; illustrated throughout with woodcut figures and diagrams; 20 x 13cm approx. All as depicted; original leather binding; leather covering of boards a little scuffed and some minor corner abrasion etc. but for its antiquity this book is very well-preserved indeed. Overall it is in VG+ condition, with no significant faults. Various former owners' inscriptions to front cover etc as depicted, dating from 1735. (G. Riddell of the prolific book stamp was at Trinity Cambridge c. 1770 but the owners who signed their names prior to this date have not yet been traced and are not recorded as having attended Trinity College). Some indistinct / very light and faint pencil notes are inscribed upon the back cover pages.
