Discover the foundations of Japanese rope art with Introduction to Shibari and Rope Tying, a clear and beginner-friendly guide designed for readers who want to understand rope handling, basic ties, body awareness, and responsible practice from the ground up.
Shibari is more than simply tying rope. It combines technique, communication, creativity, precision, and awareness. For a complete beginner, however, unfamiliar terminology, rope choices, knot structures, and safety considerations can quickly become confusing. This guide breaks the subject into simple, practical lessons so you can build your skills gradually and confidently.
Inside, you will learn how to choose suitable rope, prepare and care for your materials, handle rope smoothly, understand important terminology, and practice essential knots and foundational ties. You will also explore important principles of consent, communication, circulation awareness, rope placement, tension control, and recognizing warning signs during practice.
Rather than rushing into complicated patterns, this book emphasizes strong fundamentals. Clear explanations help you understand not only how basic techniques are performed, but also why careful rope placement, communication, and body awareness matter.
Whether you are exploring Shibari as a creative rope art, developing practical rope-handling skills, or simply curious about its traditions and techniques, this book provides an approachable place to begin.
Inside this beginner’s guide, you’ll discover:
- The history and basic principles of Shibari
- Essential terminology every beginner should understand
- How to select the right rope length, thickness, and material
- Proper rope preparation, coiling, storage, and maintenance
- Fundamental knots, hitches, frictions, and rope-handling techniques
- Beginner-friendly single-column and double-column ties
- Principles of tension, positioning, and body awareness
- Consent, communication, boundaries, and responsible practice
- Common beginner mistakes and how to correct them
- Practical safety habits for developing your skills gradually
With patience, responsible practice, and a solid understanding of the fundamentals, rope tying can become a rewarding craft built on technique, awareness, and creativity.
Start with the basics, strengthen your rope-handling skills, and build a safer, more confident foundation in Shibari and rope tying.

Store description
We first started out as “The Paperback Exchange,” a chain of physical bookstores where we would part exchange your beloved books for new stories to transport you to faraway places. However, as shopping started to evolve to online shops and marketplaces, we bid our stores goodbye to become “PBShop.” This transition has only allowed us to blossom as we now ship thousands of titles to book lovers across the globe. We pride ourselves in being a community of local book lovers which allows our passion and devotion to shine in everything we do. In 2020 we not only celebrated our 20th birthday but our 1st birthday as being completely employee owned after becoming an E.O.T in September 2019. We are proud to be different and embrace standing apart on a book mountain by working from a virtual inventory which allows us to provide thousands of books that may be difficult to get for your bookshelf or your studies. Working with a number of different suppliers allows us to explore other avenues such as puzzles, sheet music and even stationery so we really do have something for everyone. Life is about being versatile in all realms of existence. If this is your first visit or you are a returning customer, we would like to welcome you to the PBShop family, for there is no friend as loyal as a book. We are a company who put our customers at the centre of everything we do as we understand the importance of reading because once you learn to read, you will forever be free. There are a whole lot of things in this world of ours that we are yet to explore, which is why we will forever inspire curious minds.…
