Item description from seller

Near contemporary analysis of the startling impact, including widespread public panic, of Orson Welles' broadcast of "The War of the Worlds,'' which millions of his radio listeners took to be a true account of a Martian invasion of Earth on that Halloween night in 1938. Taking a social psychological approach, interview data was analyzed from 135 persons who were frightened or otherwise upset by the broadcast, & leading psychologists of the day weighed in on why so many believed that the invasion was real. 228 pages. Orig. published in 1940, this is the Third Printing o that FIRST EDITION from 1952. With burgundy cloth-covered boards lettered in gilt to spine, this hardcover octavo (8vo) is in Near Fine condition: just slightly less crisp than Brand New, marred only by light spotting to top outside page edges! Exceptionally clean, binding strong & straight, hinges secure, pages creamy white with just a hint of tanning, completely unmarked. Very mild bumping to corners & spine tips. No DJ. Our photos depict the Exact book you will receive, never "stock" images of books we don't actually have! Same day shipping on all orders received by 2pm weekdays (Pacific time); later orders, weekends, & holidays ship very next business day.…
