Because of the lacunae in the literary sources, the book is based on very careful archaeological evidence; it reveals a good grasp of British tribal society at the time, and of the complex organizational, logistical, and supply problems facing the Romans in transporting 40,000 men across the seas and into territory about which they knew very little.
