Synopsis

Provides an assessment of the so-called Sai Baba movement, a tag created by Charles White and employed by other writers also. This book gives abiographical overview of three saints who lived in Maharashtra. The most well known in India is Shirdi Sai Baba (d.1918). The Muslim context ofthis "Hinduised" figure is probed. Upasni Maharaj (d.1941) is traced asthe Hindu disciple of Shirdi Sai who established Sakori ashram. MeherBaba (d.1969), of Irani Zoroastrian ancestry, is described from hisperiod at Sakori with Upasni Maharaj. In contrast to White andRigopoulos, these three mystics are treated by Shepherd as beingindependent entities from the Sathya Sai Baba movement. Three appendices cover the dramatic complaints against Sathya Sai Baba of Puttaparthimade by ex-devotees, an exposure which has contradicted thecontroversial claim of this guru to be the reincarnation of Shirdi Sai.Includes 480 annotations and index.
