Scarce original government printing of TNEC Monograph No. 39-A: ?Review and Criticism on Behalf of Standard Oil Co. (New Jersey) and Sun Oil Co. of Monograph No. 39, with Rejoinder by Monograph Author.? Monograph No. 39, by Roy C. Cook, addressed control of the petroleum industry by major oil companies; Monograph No. 39-A preserves the oil companies? formal review and criticism of that report, followed by the author?s rejoinder.
The Temporary National Economic Committee, often called the ?Monopoly Committee,? was established by Congress in 1938 to investigate monopoly, corporate concentration, and economic power in the United States, holding hearings from December 1938 through March 1941 and producing a major series of technical research monographs.
This pamphlet is an unusually direct primary-source record of the policy conflict over petroleum-industry concentration and antitrust policy in the late New Deal period. It is useful for researchers and collectors of American economic history, antitrust history, petroleum history, Standard Oil, Sun Oil, corporate regulation, monopoly studies, New Deal government documents, and 1940s economics.
Provenance note: Previous-owner name and date at top: ?Virgil Salera, Washington D.C., 11-20-41.? Virgil Salera was an economist of the period; a later 1955 Economic Report of the President lists him among the Council of Economic Advisers? senior staff and consultants, and contemporary academic notices identify him at Iowa State College. The inscription adds some economic-history interest, though it is a simple ownership mark rather than an author signature.
Condition: Good with moderate signs of use and wear. Pages are clean and unmarked.
