Cependant, Le Chêne et le Veau, publié à l'époque du néo-stalinisme brejnévien, ne pouvait à l'évidence tout raconter sans mettre en danger certaines: ce n'est que bien plus tard qu'il pourrait livrer le récit, accompagné des noms réels, de son existence d'écrivain clandestin, et exposer la manière dont ses oeuvres furent cachées, reproduites, mises en circulation par le " samizdat ", expédiées à l'étranger, la façon aussi dont l'énorme documentation nécessaire lui était procurée, dont il trouvait à être hébergé pour écrire hors des persécutions, des filatures, des risques de rapt des manuscrits, etc.
Ce sont ces chapitres inédits de ses mémoires qui sont publiés ici pour la première fois en Occident, dans ces Invisibles qui constituent un émouvant hommage aux dizaines d'inconnus, enfin sortis de l'anonymat, qui ont aidé le plus grand écrivain russe de ce siècle dans sa résistance victorieuse à al tyrannie:
" Quand je me suis mis à écrire ces pages et à faire surgir par le souvenir mes compagnons d'armes, mes collaborateurs, mes amis, tous ou presque tous encore en vie et encore en danger, ils m'ont entouré de leurs ombres affectueuses et aujourd'hui je sonde leur regard, j'écoute leur voix avec plus d'attention que je ne le faisais jadis dans le feu du combat.
Anonymes, ils ont tout risqué sans recevoir en contrepartie l'admiration des hommes, cette admiration qui nous rend plus douces la mort et la ruine de nos vies. La publication de ces pages, pour beaucoup d'entre eux, arrivera trop tard.
Le sort en a décidé ainsi: je suis indemne et eux ont toujours la hache suspendue au-dessus de leur tête.
Un pressentiment, une certitude m'habitent: je retournerai en Russie. Hélas, lesquels d'entre eux déjà ne reverrai-je plus? "
