The Involuntary Nervous System by Walter Holbrook Gaskell. This volume, published in 1916 as part of Longmans, Green and Co.'s Monographs on Physiology edited by Ernest H. Starling, traces the history and organization of the vertebrate involuntary nervous system. Gaskell argues that motor neurons supplying involuntary tissues lie outside the central nervous system and reach their targets through connector fibres that form three main outflows: the bulbar (vagus and related cranial nerves), the thoracico-lumbar (sympathetic), and the sacral (pelvic) outflow. He classifies involuntary muscles by embryological origin and innervation into vascular/dermal, endodermal (gut-related sphincters and gut wall), and segmental-duct muscles, and discusses the roles of reflexes and inhibition, as well as hormonal actions (adrenaline and acetylcholine) on these tissues. The work unifies anatomy, physiology, and embryology with a phylogenetic perspective, arguing for a common origin with the voluntary system and a shared connective framework via connector neurons. It is a rigorous foundational text in autonomic physiology.
