About this title

Examines the history of the Iranian Revolution, starting with information about Iran prior to the revolution, through the events of the revolution itself, and finally touching on life in Iran after the overthrow of the shah.

From School Library Journal:

Gr 9 Up–Wagner leads this thorough look at Iran's 1979 Islamic revolution with Ayatollah Khomeini's dramatic return from exile and then backs up to explain the events leading up to that moment. Chapters cover the origin of the Pahlavi dynasty, Khomeini's early life and how he came to symbolize opposition to the shah's regime, and the shah's aggressive campaigns of reform and Westernization. The opposing personalities of the shah and Khomeini are contrasted effectively. Wagner highlights the importance of the misunderstandings and missteps of all parties, including the Americans, in bringing about revolution. Fans of Marjane Satrapi's Persepolis (Pantheon, 2003) will be pleased to see her mentioned as a witness to the early days of the revolution. A summary section brings the revolution's legacy into perspective, mentioning the contested 2009 presidential election. The format is attractive and photographs are well chosen. A solid addition to the series.Rebecca Donnelly, Loma Colorado Public Library, Rio Rancho, NM
