Isaiah, Translated and Explained: Isaiah I-Xxxv

Isaiah, Translated And Explained: Isaiah I-XXXV by Joseph Addison Alexander is a scholarly abridgment of Alexander's larger commentary on Isaiah from the 19th century. This volume presents an accessible introduction to the prophetic book, blending translation with extensive interpretation. It discusses the nature of prophecy, the history of the Isaiah material, and the historical setting of the Judean kingdom during the Assyrian period. The text covers the structure of Isaiah, including chapters 1–12 and major sections like 2–12, outlines methodological principles of prophecy interpretation, and provides an annotated discussion of key chapters (I–VI) and major themes such as the coming of the Messiah and the theocratic ideal. The Preface explains the aims of the abridgment: to retain essential meaning while omitting incidental matter from the larger work, to widen circulation, and to promote a correct understanding of Scripture. Alexander's analytical approach emphasizes inspiration, authorship, and canonical status, seeking to illuminate the text for students of theology and biblical studies.
