Isaiah Translated and Explained by J.A. Alexander, an Abridgment of the Author's Critical Commentary on Isaiah

Isaiah Translated And Explained By J.A. Alexander, An Abridgment Of The Author's Critical Commentary On Isaiah by Joseph Addison Alexander is a dense, scholarly abridgment of Alexander's critical commentary on Isaiah that concentrates on the later prophecies and their interpretive arc. It presents a framework in which the later chapters form a distinct discourse alongside the earlier material, arguing for a two-economies theory (old and new dispensation) and a twofold view of Israel (carnal nation vs. true spiritual church). The work treats the ceremonial law as symbolic and temporary, interprets Israel as representative of the broader church, and emphasizes the unity of the prophetic message across the transition from ritual to spiritual worship. It provides verse-by-verse notes, philological discussion, and cross-references to Kings, Chronicles, and the New Testament, using events from Hezekiah’s era (Assyrian threat, deliverance, illness, and the Babylonian embassy) to illustrate themes such as divine sovereignty, idolatries, exile, and the advent of the Messiah and the church. The commentary views Isaiah 60–66 as part of one continuous prophetic arc, culminating in a cosmos-wide vision of Zion and the church.
