Isolationism: Opposing Viewpoints (American History Series)

Twentieth-century American history has been dominated by three events: World War I, World War II, and the cold war. American participation in all of these conflicts was adamantly opposed by isolationists who cited America's historic noninvolvement in world affairs.

Grade 9 Up?This series entry considers questions that were "hot" 50 or 60 years ago and does not present any views on the relevance of the debates to today's problems. However, it does provide an excellent balance of primary sources for research. Chalberg includes excerpts of speeches from politicians as well as editorials and essays espousing and opposing isolationist views, mostly from 1914-1950. Clear and succinct prefaces to each chapter place the selections in historical context. Especially notable is his evenhanded treatment of the commentators and his careful definitions of isolationism. Discussion questions are grouped at the end of the book. The writing styles and language are demanding, so the book will most likely be used by serious history students. An extensive annotated bibliography is included.?Jonathan Betz-Zall, Sno-Isle Regional Library System, Edmonds, WA
