3 volumes, 12mo, pp. 380; [2], 360; 444; original blue paper-covered boards, at some point rebacked and re-labelled in the style of the original binding. The spine paper is incongruously fresh; the font, type- setting, and design of the labels are clearly later; and, signs of the spine restoration can be glimpsed within. (Original) boards are a weathered dull grey. Red cloth clamshell box, morocco label lettered in gilt. In volume III, G12 - I1 (pp. 167-194) has mistakenly been placed in front of G2-11 (pp. 147-166). This likely occurred not when the volume was originally bound, since the reversed sections do not correspond to complete signature gatherings, but when the volume was rebacked. The whole recessed cluster of pages is now detached from the sewing. Ownership signature on the title page of each volume: "H.R.H. The Dutchess of York," i.e., Princess Frederica Charlotte of Prussia (Friederike Charlotte Ulrike Katharina, 1767-1820), a Prussian princess by birth and a British princess by marriage. She was the eldest daughter of King Frederick William II of Prussia and the wife of Prince Frederick, Duke of York and Albany, second son of King George III of the United Kingdom. A masterpiece of gothic literature, The Italian was translated as soon as it was published by the abbot Morellet.
