Ivy Chimneys (1885)

Ivy Chimneys is a novel written by Edith Cornforth and published in 1885. The story is set in the English countryside and follows the lives of a wealthy family, the Devereuxs, who reside in the grand estate of Ivy Chimneys. The family consists of the parents, Mr. and Mrs. Devereux, and their three children, Arthur, Maud, and Ethel. The novel explores the dynamics within the family and their relationships with the various characters in their social circle. The story is primarily focused on the romantic entanglements of the Devereux siblings. Arthur is in love with his childhood friend, Alice, but is forced to choose between her and his family's expectations of him. Maud, on the other hand, is engaged to the wealthy and charming Mr. Browne, but her heart belongs to the poor but honest farmer, Tom. Ethel, the youngest of the siblings, is pursued by the dashing Captain Wentworth, but she is hesitant to commit to him due to his reputation as a womanizer. The novel also touches on themes of class, societal expectations, and the role of women in Victorian England. Ivy Chimneys is a classic example of Victorian literature and provides an interesting insight into the social norms and values of the time. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
