About this Item
123 pages. Printed in double columns. Christopher Layer, an English lawyer and Jacobite conspirator, was convicted of high treason on November 21, 1722, for his role in the Atterbury Plot, a scheme to restore the House of Stuart. His plan involved seizing key London institutions, including the Tower of London, the Royal Mint, and the Bank of England, while also capturing the royal family and assassinating government officials. Betrayed by associates, Layer was arrested, tried, and executed on May 17, 1723. Following LayerÃ"Ã Ã s conviction, Parliament pursued John Plunkett, George Kelly (alias Johnson), and Dr. Francis Atterbury, Bishop of Rochester, under Bills of Pains and Penalties for their involvement in the conspiracy. King George I had warned Parliament of a dangerous plot in October 1722, leading to the arrest and interrogation of suspected conspirators. Atterbury, a vocal Jacobite, was banished from England, while Kelly and Plunkett faced imprisonment. Extracted from the monumental Complete Collection of State Trials , a cornerstone of British legal and political history, this report documents proceedings involving treason, sedition, and other pivotal offences. Originally compiled to serve both as a legal reference and a vehicle of political discourse, the series shaped contemporary and subsequent understanding of justice, authority, and dissent. This particular offering is a disbound trial report: all leaves are loose, unsewn, and without binding. The generously sized sheets on which these trials are printed offer particular pleasure to the eye and hand, bearing clear signs of their handmade origin: chain lines and wire impressions from the mould are readily visible, several pages display watermarks, and the paper varies subtly in thickness, all characteristic of 18th century rag paper. Size: 30 x 48 cms, 12 x 19 inches approx. Quantity Available: 1. Category: State Trials; State Trials::Large Folio; Printed before 1800; Inventory No: 231890.
