A classic dictionary, highly reliable. A completely romaniz- ed dictionary, easy to use, romanization based on the "Hepburn System" as portrayed in this early example. * Hepburn was a medical missionary to Amoy & Singapore in 1843 to 1845. In 1859, after the opening of Japan to Americans he & his wife salied under commission of the Presbyterian Board for Kanagawa. They arrived in Japan Oct. 18th, 1959, and were among the first American missionaries in Japan. * He opened a dispensary, where by 1869 he was ministering to 30-50 Japanese patients daily. He also carried on a training class for young Japanese men. He was one of the founders and the first president of Meiji Gakuin, a boys' school in Tokyo. * His wife began classes for girls which was one of the first steps ever taken toward the education of Japanese women. In 1867, the current dictionary was issued, a pioneer work in the field & in 1891, he published a Bible dictionary, the profits were used for the Shiloh Church in Yokohama and the Meiji Gakuin.
