Centred on the small, overcrowded flat she shared on Upper Street in Islington – a space simultaneously a home, studio, office and meeting place – the book opens up the everyday conditions from which her work, collaborations and politics were organised.
The recordings include a landmark British Library oral history interview and newly discovered tapes in which Spence talks frankly about her life and work. Together they offer a sustained, unvarnished account of a working life, shaped by precarious housing, chronic illness and low-paid, self-directed cultural work.
This is an intimate, often unsettling self-portrait in text and pictures, and an indispensable resource for understanding Spence’s contribution to feminist, socialist and documentary photography.
