Mezzotint portrait, 27 x 18 inches. A fine copy. John Penn was a grandson of William Penn and one of the principal heirs to the Penn estates in Pennsylvania (not to be confused with his older cousin, who was lieut.- governor of the Province for a time and a leading Loyalist). Penn grew up in England, but moved to Pennsylvania in 1782, living in a house on Schuylkill for eight years while family affairs were sorted out. He spent the rest of his life in England, occupying various political posts and dabbling in social concerns (he formed a society for the improvement of the domestic life of married persons). This mezzotint portrait, after a painting by Sir William Beechy, shows him standing, in uniform, in front of his country seat, apparently in England. It is marked "Proof.".
