THIS ISN'T A JOKE STAND-UP AS SOCIAL COMMENTARY: The Joke Writing Method That Connects, Builds, and Kills

This Isn’t a Joke: Stand-Up as Social Commentary
by Nick Cutelli

Comedy isn’t just about laughs — it’s about perspective.

In This Isn’t a Joke, comedian and educator Nick Cutelli pulls back the curtain on what stand-up comedy really is: one of the most honest and impactful forms of social commentary we have.

This isn't a manual on how to "crush" at open mics or write one-liners — it's a deep dive into the mindset of the modern comedian. Cutelli introduces his original framework, the Spectrum of Society Norms, to help comics develop bold, authentic points of view that go far beyond the 99% of everyday reactions. Whether your comedy lives in the 1% (contrarian takes) or the 101% (absurd exaggeration), this book helps you turn real-life observations into unforgettable material.

Through vivid examples, worksheets, and no-BS guidance, you'll learn how to:

• Build a unique comedic voice grounded in personal truth

• Write structured material using the Setup–Punchline–Justify method

• Use details, tags, and transitions to develop longer, themed routines

• Own the stage even when the laughs don’t come

• Treat comedy as a tool for connection, commentary, and cultural reflection

Whether you're just starting out or refining your hour, This Isn’t a Joke is the realest guide out there for comedians who want their material to matter.

Comedy isn’t about fitting in — it’s about standing out. This book shows you how.
