A color woodblock print, fine condition, pristine, superb impression & fine registry, 16.5 x 34.9 cm.,verso blank,signed:Ga kyoo rojin 'Manji' Swastika superb Hokusai example of a Bijin. * OBSCURE & VERY RARE * . *** **** *** . . ["JOUROU BIJIN: BEAUTIFUL COURTESAN"] . . . THIS DEPICTS A STUNNINGLY BEAUTIFUL PROSTITUTE WHO LOOKS . . . INTO A MIRROR ADJUSTING HER COIFFEUR . . * This is a stunningly superb example, in perfect condition, flawless. Printed in nine colors, with great precision and technical skill. The impression is superb and the registry is also superb. Color woodblock prints are seldom found in such perfect production results. This marvelous example is more than likely one of the very first 'pulls' off the woodblocks, with fresh, vivid colors true to the original natural vegetal pigments. . THE SIGNATURE: . This print is signed in the lower left reading: "Ga Kyoo Roh Jin Manji Hitsu. "OLD MAN MAD WITH PAINTING." Followed by his typical Swastika symbol and "Hitsu" [bamboo brushed painting] Kanji signature. See also Lane's HOKUSAI below, on page 266. . This signature matches those found for the date ranges from 1800-1806, 1805-6 & 1834-49, per Lane's IMAGES, p.256. . Below "Hitsu" under his signature [in the block] there is a square red Hanko [seal/chop], unread, unidentified. . Hokusai used over 35 Go [studio names] in his life time, many listed in IMAGES on p.255, . Due to the superb condition we believe this example to have been printed circa 1834-39. . *** Color photos are posted to our website. . *** REFERENCE: .
