John Peter Altgeld (1847-1902) was Governor of Illinois from 1893 until 1897. A progressive Democrat, in June 1893 he pardoned the three remaining 'Chicago Martyrs' who had been convicted in 1887 of a bombing that occurred during a labor demonstration in May 1886 at Haymarket Square in Chicago.
