In December 1857, as commander of the American Home Squadron in the Caribbean, Commodore Hiram Paulding captured the American adventurer, William Walker, who had set himself up as president of Nicaragua. Paulding acted without official instructions, and was reprimanded by President James Buchanan and removed from his command.
