Reviews
Grade 2-5A simple story about an orphan named Jack who sneaks aboard a warship to rescue his sailor friend, McCloud, who has been taken by the press gang. Jack is caught and put to work. The enemy attacks, McCloud is lost, but Jack is saved and cared for by the kind Mrs. Williams. The text is so slight that it almost reads like an outline. No details are included to make the characters come alive. The cartoon illustrations look like movie stills with plenty of action in each scene. The pictures cover most of the page and are colorful and filled with details. However, Jack has the same facial expression whether he is ``working hard'' or getting new clothes, and he seems more like a cartoon than a real character. Because of the format and simple text, the book appears to be for young children, but most of them won't understand the story.Mary Jane Kibby, Eggertsville-Snyder Branch Library, N.Y.
