Jacksons Bay

This is the centennial history of one of the most isolated, and difficult to access, settlements in New Zealand. Jacksons Bay, near the southernmost extremity of the West Coast of the South Island traces its origins as a settlement back to 1874 when a large area there was set was set aside as Government "special settlement" scheme. The first would-be inhabitants arrived the following year, but although it had appeared to offer good prospects -- a safe harbour, good pastoral land, abundant timber and fishing --- it was not long before problems arose and within 10 years all but the hardiest of the settlers had left. The Bay experienced revival in the 1960s when adequate roading acess became available bringing the long-awaited prosperity. 198 pages including six appendices, bibliography, index, 34 b/w photos, e/paper maps.
