Relation, a reward for his future services. Jacob, who at the first sight had become enamoured of his cousin Rachel, proposes marriage with this Laban's youngest daughter; and as he had no marriage por tion to give the father, as the custom of the times and of the country required, he offers, as an equiva lent, seven years of personal servitude. Laban, far from embracing this occasion of consummating a marriage which had virtue and affection for its bonds, made Jacob's attachment to Rachel subservient to his avarice, and readily accepted his proposition of seven years service Thus were the laws of hospitality, and the ties of blood, made to truckle to the most sordid and detestable of all human passions and the fi'ee-born descendant of Abraham sinks into the most abject of all servitude - subjection to a near.
