Jacqueline Pascal; Or, Convent Life at Port Royal, by H.N

Jacqueline Pascal; Or, Convent Life At Port Royal, By H. N. is a biographical compilation that presents the life of Jacqueline Pascal, the younger sister of Blaise Pascal, and her involvement with Port Royal, the Jansenist movement, and the religious life of 17th-century France. Drawing from letters, memoirs, and historical sources by Victor Cousin, Faugère, and others, the work traces the Pascals’ family, Jaqueline’s early poetry and courtly years, her journey toward Port Royal, her novitiate, and her eventual death amid the controversies surrounding Jansenism and the formulary. The introduction by Rev. W. R. Williams situates Port Royal within the wider religious and intellectual currents of the era and discusses the controversy between Jansenists and Jesuits. The volume also includes Jaqueline’s own Regulations for Children, and other writings, illustrating a life of austere piety, moral discipline, and courage in defense of grace. It is both a historical document and a moving portrait of a dedicated sister and her circle.
