Many of the pieces in this exhibition were part of an important one-woman show sponsored by the Chicago Art Institute in 1952, travelled to a series of other American museums for a year, and were packed into storage at the circuit's conclusion.
Now history will repeat itself nearly fifty years later in San Francisco with this exhibit at the Chinese Historical Society of America Museum and Learning Center.
Viewers will see work that created a stir in the San Francisco Chinese community when Jade Snow Wong sat in a storefront window to make pottery, and caused a "spectacle" of herself. She has long since proved her mettle as an artist as well as a writer who documented her coming of age in the enduring autobiography, Fifth Chinese Daughter.
This elegant, fully illustrated exhibition catalog with insightful written expositions by Maxine Hong Kingston, Kathleen Hanna, Forrest L. Merrill, and the artist herself, is an invaluable document of Jade Snow Wong's work and the contributions she has made to Chinese American history and to the arts.
