Im Fokus des ersten Halbbandes steht Ibn Sina (Avicenna), der diesen Prozess massgeblich beeinflusste und spater eine bedeutende Wirkung auf die europaische Philosophie ausuben sollte. Andere wichtige Denker, die sich mit Ibn Sina kritisch auseinandersetzten, wie al-Gazali, Suhrawardi und Fahraddin ar-Razi, kommen ebenfalls ausfuhrlich zu Wort. Abschnitte uber weniger bekannte islamische Autoren, die bislang kaum erforscht wurden, und ein Kapitel uber die philosophische Tradition der syrischen Christen runden die Darstellung ab. Der zweite Halbband, der ebenfalls das 11. und 12. Jahrhundert behandelt, ist dem Westen und dort insbesondere Ibn Rusd (Averroes) und den judischen Philosophen arabischer Sprache gewidmet. Beide Teilbande gehoren zu der vierteiligen Reihe Philosophie in der islamischen Welt, die zum ersten Mal einen umfassenden Uberblick zur Geschichte der Philosophie in der islamischen Welt vermittelt.
