There are things no one knows about Jake Becker―for instance, that he had a fake relationship with Bethany Harris when he started college, or that he skipped the tryouts for a top NCAA team. What everyone does know is that trouble seems to follow him everywhere. During his sophomore year at VSU, Jake must face mounting pressure from his family, his sport, and his academics while fighting for a starting spot on the football team and trying to keep his two lives separate: the one inside the university and the one beyond it. It sounds simple enough―until Emma arrives, clashes with Arabia erupt, and Beth’s music begins to blur every boundary. Especially that last part. By the end of the year, everything no one knew about Jake Becker will be out in the open. Even the things he never knew about himself.

Rolly was born and raised in Orihuela until moving to Valencia in 2007, where she enrolled at the Polytechnic University. After six years―and two unfinished degrees―she accepted that science, and university life in general, were not her calling. She is the author of the Love and Virtue trilogy (2019) and the fantasy saga The Extinction of the Elves, whose first book, First Plague, was published in 2021. Deeply drawn to U.S. aesthetics and sports, she brings both passions into this novel, which portrays life in a fictional Utah city in 1985 and the world of college American football―clearly inspired by Shotgun Lovesongs by Nickolas Butler.
