Two hardcover volumes, octavo, 524pp, monochrome illustrations. Slightly toned text block edges. Light blue card dustwrapper worn along edges and corners with chipping and tears on head and tail of spine (2cm & 3cm respectively on Volume 1). Dustwrappers discoloured along spines; professionally protected by superior non-adhesive polypropylene film. Very good otherwise. Postage quoted is for a standard format octavo book. Final charges may vary depending on size and weight. In December 1606, one hundred and twenty emigrants left London in three small vessels. They landed nearly five months later in Virginia and founded a settlement which they called Jamestown. Thus, the first permanent English colony was established in America. During the first few years, the colony was beset by extreme hardship. The local Indians regarded the settlement as an infringement of their territory and were hostile to the settlers. Famine, plague and internal dissension also took their toll. The author collected all known documents pertaining to Jamestown, and annotated them; the collection gives a fascinating and graphic picture of the colony that was destined to become the United States.
