(5 1/2 x 8 1/4 in - 14 x 20.5 cm), 2 volumes, top edge gilt, gold gilt lettering and decoration (three flying cranes and blossoms) on blue cloth, large fold out color map at rear of volume 2, volume 1 - 377 pp and volume 2 - 374 pp. Illustrated with 50 tissue guard protected black and white photogravures produced by Gilbo & Co. Tissue guards have descriptive letterpress titles facing the plate. The dust jackets are burgundy cloth with gild lettering. Set comes with an matching slip case with gilt lettering on one face. A very attractively bound set. A wide ranging account of Japan at the turn of the century with accompanying illustrations. Many of the photogravures in the set are based on well know images often seen in the albumen souvenir photographs from the turn of the century. ~ Condition. The books are in Very Good condition. The gilt on covers and spines is bright. Minor fraying at head and foot of spine on both volumes. Minor puckering at two places on cloth on the front cover of volume 1. Corners are lightly bumped. The hinges inside the back covers are cracking but the binding remains tight and solid. Very clean inside and free of foxing, toning or blemishes. The map at the rear of volume 2 has some misfolding and a tear starting in the margin against and extending slightly into the image area. The set does not have the matching dust jackets. ~~ Heavier set and extra shipping charge will apply for mailing outside the US.
