Grade 2-5-- Jason Harkness has never heard of a cat that can talk--but then Lootna is no ordinary cat, and her "owner," Cooper Vor, is no ordinary neighbor. In fact, they're both aliens from outer space. As an Intragalactic Troubleshooter--a kind of 21st-century Superman--Coop zips around the galaxy, his trusty, if cynical, cat-panion at his side, trying to solve problems and right the wrongs done to victims throughout the universe. When Coop invites Jason to join their adventure, they blast off to rescue the green energy crystal from the clutches of the Planet Urkar's "Grugg the Awful" so that the Court Jester Robot of Zarr can tell jokes once again. The mission, of course, succeeds, and the threesome prepares for the sure-to-come sequel. As in their This Island Isn't Big Enough for the Four of Us (Crowell, 1987), Greer and Ruddick use snappy, contemporary dialogue in short chapters that young readers can easily devour. The plot is simple and logical, and it comes to a quick conclusion after a small dose of complication. The characters are broadly drawn with humorous touches, and--unlike the brawn-over-brain types often found on TV--use their wits to outsmart the villainous monster. While not great literature, this is a definite crowd-pleaser, sure to attract both early-intermediate and slightly older reluctant readers in search of a fast-paced science-fiction adventure. --Nancy Menaldi-Scanlan, Wheeler School, Providence, RI
